First published February 26, 2014; doi:10.1152/jn.00521.2013.— There are many theories on the purpose of neural adaptation, but evidence remains elusive. Here, we discuss the recent work by Benucci et al. (Nat Neurosci 16: 724–729, 2013), who measured for the first time the immediate effects of adaptation on the overall activity of a neuronal population. These measurements confirm two long-standing hypotheses about the purpose of adaptation, namely that adaptation counteracts biases in the statistics of the environment, and that it maintains decorrelation in neuronal stimulus selectivity.

متن کاملVisual Interactions Conform to Pattern Decorrelation in Multiple Cortical Areas
Neural responses to visual stimuli are strongest in the classical receptive field, but they are also modulated by stimuli in a much wider region. In the primary visual cortex, physiological data and models suggest that such contextual modulation is mediated by recurrent interactions between cortical areas. Outside the primary visual cortex, imaging data has shown qualitatively similar interacti...
متن کاملEffects of visual deprivation on epileptic activity in mature rat visual cortex
Effects of visual deprivation on the induction of epileptiform activity were studied in layer II/III of mature rat primary visual cortex. Field potentials were evoked by stimulation of layer IV in slices from control and dark-reared (OR) rats. Picrotoxin (PTX)-induced epileptic activity was characterized by spontaneous and evoked epileptic field potentials (EFPs). The results showed that OR s...

Maloney RT. The basis of orientation decoding in human primary visual cortex: fineor coarse-scale biases? J Neurophysiol 113: 1–3, 2015. First published May 28, 2014; doi:10.1152/jn.00196.2014.—Orientation signals in human primary visual cortex (V1) can be reliably decoded from the multivariate pattern of activity as measured with functional magnetic resonance imaging (fMRI). The precise underl...
متن کاملAdaptation and temporal decorrelation by single neurons in the primary visual cortex.
Limiting redundancy in the real-world sensory inputs is of obvious benefit for efficient neural coding, but little is known about how this may be accomplished by biophysical neural mechanisms. One possible cellular mechanism is through adaptation to relatively constant inputs. Recent investigations in primary visual (V1) cortical neurons have demonstrated that adaptation to prolonged changes in...
